I’ve been doing a recent series of articles about how to save money when printing. I just did an article about how Century Gothic is the most economical font because it has the thinnest characters and uses the least ink. When I was writing that article, I wish I had come across this new font idea.

This idea is called Ecofont, and it can be downloaded free online. In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that I am in no way affiliated with Ecofont or its developers, i just think everyone should know about it. Plus, Ecofont is totally free, so I wouldn’t have anything to gain from promoting it anyway. This article should be taken as an informational resource for anyone interested in more eco-friendly printing measures.

Ecofont takes its base structure from Verdana, a font most are familiar with. Its built-in capabilities, however, allow it to achieve far more green-friendly printing. Ecofont letters are filled with bubbles of white space. On average, the ink usage reduction per letter is 20%. Letters printer in Ecofont, when closely examined, cause me to think of swiss cheese.

This swiss-cheesery is hardly visible though. You have to increase the font to size 18 or larger in order for the holes to be clearly visible and even then, the text is still very readable. The only different between Ecofont and Verdana at a standard 12-point font is Ecofont’s slight blurriness. That, and naturally, 20% less money spent on ink.

This is along the lines of somehow using 20% less words when composing a sentence or 20% less pages when writing a detailed report. Those two options are hardly viable if the writing is to be preserved, but changing to Ecofont is an easy fix that does the same thing.

Amazingly, Ecofont seems to be almost alone in this arena so far, although it’s unlikely to stay that way, just as the software is unlikely to remain freeware. Another online software package called Preton Saver offers pixel saving and ink-cutting measures for graphics, photos and a variety of fonts, but it’s unfortunately not freeware. It does have a free trial though and it may be worth evaluating to see if money can be saved over the long run.
